I went down to visit her this weekend - celebrated her 1 months (really 5 weeks) birthday. I babysat for a few hours while the parents went to a play and got some practice with basic baby maintenance.

My niece Iris Jones Eckelman was born early Friday morning! Everyone is doing fine but tired. I am visiting them right now. More photos will appear later, probably on my or my sister's Flickr pages.

Because I do travel a lot, and I'm interested to see how it compares to last year. (Total = 16 = 8 in China, 8 in US)
(in chronological order) (does not indicate repeat visits to the same city)
Nanjing, PRC Shanghai, PRC Suzhou, PRC Cambridge, MA Buffalo, NY Toronto, ON Silver Spring, MD Hope, ME Newport, RI Princeton, NJ Louisville, KY New Haven, CT Brockway, PA
ok, so 13, less than last year. 3 in China, 1 in Canada, 9 in US.

We finally decorated the tree, put up the stockings, and got the rest of the Christmas decorations up. Of course, the tree is a genuine Hatchet Mountain Farms tree that we cut out of my parents' field at Thanksgiving. And only the most energy-efficient LED lights for us!

So, xthlcm and I brought back a HUGE pumpkin from Maine this weekend. I've been idly dithering about what to carve - sometimes I try chinese characters.
But today a friend clued me in to this .... "Yes We Carve." Download stencils for Obama-themed pumpkin carvings! I love it.
now, will our landlord (who lives on the first floor) let us put the pumpkin on the front porch steps?

xthlcm and I did the Hub On Wheels bike ride on Sunday with some friends. We had a great time biking 30 miles (plus 6 or 7 getting from home to the start point and back) in beautiful late summer weather with about 4,000 other people. I got to visit a lot of parts of the city of Boston that I'd never been to before, which was really cool. Not only was it fun, but we managed to raise $770 for an important cause. Check out my photos through the photo link or xthlcm's are here.

Our favorite chocolatier has made chocolate assortments for the two presidential candidates. You can vote for your preference as many times as you can afford the chocolates (in dollars and/or pounds).

I've been busy lately. With only 2 1/2 weeks left in China, I have been working hard to try to finish my interviews and other research. The photos here are from a short trip to Shanghai in early May.

I'm leaving China 5 weeks from today! (yes, I'm counting)
Now that time is running out, I have been getting busy with the research and so on. I already did two interviews yesterday and just finished an hour-long presentation to the whole Hopkins-Nanjing Center. I'm about to head out the door to another interview this evening. On Friday I have a shorter presentation to just the faculty here, and then two more interviews that afternoon and evening. I will be exhausted! Hope I can keep up the pace.

Thanks to those of you who wrote with concern for my safety during the earthquake in Chengdu. I am just fine and did not feel anything during the earthquake, although some people in Shanghai did, which is actually further away from the epicenter than Nanjing is. I'm over 2,000 kilometers from Chengdu (although I did spend a week there last November).
The news this morning is reporting higher casualties, in the range of 10,000 killed, which is terrible, but the government has a very organized response and they are doing everything they can to reduce further deaths. It is a tragedy, but nothing like what is going on in Myanmar after the cyclone.

One of the major Buddhist holidays is the birthday of the Bodhisattva Guanyin I got up at the crack of dawn to go with some Buddhist friends to a temple outside of Nanjing. This is sort of an annual pilgrimage for their family. Both of the adult daughters credit the Guanyin at the temple with helping them to have children of the desired gender.
The temple is also famous for its Buddhist grottoes.

Yesterday evening I "guest taught" the Western cooking class for the Center students. We did chili and cornbread. As you can see from their expressions, the students all really liked the food.

xthlcm was here for about two weeks. We didn't get as much touristing done (or as much work done!) as we'd planned, but we did see a few places around Nanjing and Shanghai. It was very nice to spend some time together, even if it was brief. Hard to get back to my "normal" single life and my research, though.

Action shot of my second knitting project. The model, my friend's son Elias, was born in October.
I recently finished another baby hat in a similar pattern but different yarn, that is already on its way to another friend's baby (born in February).
In fact, I've already started a third hat ... the babies keep coming!
Meanwhile I am still working on the baby blanket.
